The Risks of Breast Cancer Hypervigilance

For more than 30 years, the Rubio Cancer Center has offered a complete, integrated approach to cancer treatment that combines the most effective elements of traditional and alternative treatments. As the founder and medical director of the Rubio Cancer Center, Dr. Geronimo Rubio has long been critical of the degree to which mammograms were being encouraged by the medical community – an opinion that is becoming increasingly validated by modern research.

The problem arises from a long-held misunderstanding about the nature of cancers. In 1977, cancer treatment specialists began advising regular mammograms for women after age 50, while assuming all breast cancers were essentially the same. Continuing with the assumption that a significant period of time passes between tumor growth and metastasis throughout the body, that recommendation was extended to younger women, believing that earlier detection would increase odds of survival.

In 1993, as evidence began showing that early detection had little effect on breast cancer survival rates, the National Institutes of Health withdrew previous recommendations about early screening, but was met with strong opposition. Only in recent years have concerns become more widespread that the consequences of a false positive diagnosis may outweigh the danger of the cancer. Many women who have had breasts removed after discovering abnormal growths are now learning that most such growths are harmless, while radiation treatments may increase their risk of heart disease and lung cancer. There is even speculation that the radiation used in the mammogram itself may inadvertently trigger breast cancer growth.

While breast cancer is still a serious issue – the second deadliest cancer for women in the United States – some women are now choosing to forego screenings if they are determined to have a low risk for the disease. If a woman discovers an unusual growth in the course of her daily routine, it is still highly recommended that she receive an immediate examination, but doctors today are putting much less emphasis on routine screenings than they have in the past.

Integrated Therapy – A Complete Approach to Cancer Treatment

Since its opening in 1985, the Rubio Cancer Center has based its treatment programs on the concept of integrated therapy, a series of differing treatments designed to complement one another. Integrative therapy providers recognize that an effective strategy to combating something as complex and severe as cancer should never disregard the potential benefits of any treatment, nor overlook any aspect of the disease’s impact on the patient’s life. Dr. Geronimo Rubio, medical director and founder of the Rubio Cancer Center, still holds to this approach, which continues to gain increasing acceptance in the medical community.

Integrated therapy often begins with variations of traditional treatments to diagnose and attack the cancer. Knowing the exact form of the cancer allows the use of targeted therapy medication, designed to prevent the further growth of a specific type of cancer with minimal harm to the rest of the body, or immunotherapy, which programs the immune system to recognize cancer cells as a threat and attack accordingly. Traditional chemotherapy is also available to destroy any fast-growing cells, which usually includes any cancer cells. Modern treatments are delivered in low, frequent doses that are effective against cancer while doing much less damage to the rest of the body, as opposed to the high-dose chemotherapy of the past. As the growth is stopped, tumors can be removed by various surgeries or killed by radiation treatments.

After the tumors are removed, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy can continue in order to ensure complete eradication of the cancer throughout the body. At this point, acupuncture, bioelectrical medicine, detoxification, and nutrition plans are implemented to relieve the side effects of the primary treatments, as well as promote good general health, strengthening the patient and speeding recovery. Psychological counseling is also a critical part of the recovery process, not only for the humanitarian purpose of improving a patient’s quality of life, but as a further aid to restoring the confidence and positive outlook that can have a profound impact on continued health and vitality.

What is an Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor?

Dr. Geronimo Rubio, the founder of The Rubio Cancer Clinic, believes in connecting patients to the newest treatments that increase chance of remission while minimizing adverse effects. One of the cutting-edge approaches to treatment that The Rubio Cancer Clinic offers is immunotherapy. One of the most promising immunotherapy treatments is the immune checkpoint inhibitor.

The immune system has the ability to differentiate between normal cells and foreign bodies, including cancer cells. This ability allows the system to eliminate disease without harming normal cells. The keys to this system are checkpoints, which must be activated or deactivated to trigger an immune response.

Unfortunately, cancer cells can use these checkpoints to trick the body into reacting to them as normal, healthy cells. Thus, they are not attacked by the immune system.

Since Rubio Cancer Center is an integrative Medical Facility they use low dose chemotherapy and radiation, combined with customized cancer vaccines. The combination approach stops cancer from spreading and then, destroys the cancer using a powerful weapon, the patients own immune system.

This is what the facility was founded on this combined approach along with detoxification protocols to remove the dead proteins and cancer cells from the body.
Patients get a healthy new approach to life after treatment is completed.

A Look at Cancer Vaccines and How They Work

The professionals at The Rubio Cancer Center employ cutting-edge techniques to treat the disease of cancer, such as immunotherapy. An exciting form of cancer immunotherapy used at the Rubio Cancer Center is the use of custom vaccines. While people typically think of vaccines as preventative measures, they are now used to boost the immune system to target the invader cells and treat any form of the disease.

Cancer vaccines work by activating T cells, the body’s natural defenses, and training them to recognize the tumor present using the specific antibodies that it makes. To accomplish this, through the patients own blood we are able to isolate antigens and put them together in a petrie dish with the killer cells which then causes an immune response, including antibody production. Antibodies bind to the antigens present on the surface of tumor cells and direct the T cells to attack. In addition, T cells can recognize cancer antigens present inside tumor cells.

The FDA approved the first vaccine for cancer treatment in 2010. Called sipuleucel-T, or Provenge, the treatment can be used to treat some men who have metastatic prostate cancer by stimulating a response to the antigen prostatic acid phosphatase. This antigen is present on the majority of prostate cancer cells.

At Rubio Cancer Center we not only treat prostate cancer, but all types of cancer.

Rubio Cancer Center a full-service cancer hospital in San Diego, California that attracts cancer patients from throughout the world due to its cutting-edge approach to cancer treatment. In particular, the Rubio Cancer Center is known for its advancement of one of cancer’s newest and most advanced forms of treatment therapy – immunotherapy.

In short, immunotherapy is a non-invasive form of cancer treatment that aims to achieve a balance between supporting the body’s immune system and using low doses of chemotherapy and radiation to eradicate cancer cells. The body’s immune system is its main defense against the negative influence of proteins, antigens, bacteria, chemicals and cancerous cells. By supporting this system through a variety of detoxification, non-toxic medication, and custom vaccination therapies, the body is better equipped to fight off cancerous cells and send cancer into remission. Cancer is an aggressive illness and patients require a strong immune system to survive. Immunotherapy aims to improve a patient’s likelihood of survival by strengthening their immune system.

The Rubio Cancer Center in Tijuana, Mexico, has been researching ways to reverse cancer for more than 25 years. Dr. Geronimo Rubio, the founder of the Rubio Cancer Center, is the coauthor of the 2013 publication, Breaking the Cancer Code: A Revolutionary Approach to Reversing Cancer.

The book explores new methods of curing cancer that involve the use of immunotherapy. Through years of research, Dr. Rubio has explored ways to “teach” the body’s immune system to seek out and destroy cancerous cells. The book explains how this approach can be married with holistic healing methods and preventative treatment to potentially eradicate cancer.

Breaking the Cancer Code is coauthored by Carolyn Gross, a patient advocate and wellness expert who chose to treat her own breast cancer with immunotherapy instead of traditional chemotherapy and radiation. Using this surgery-free option, which involves injections of new cancer vaccines that endeavor to strengthen the immune system so it can function at its best, Gross successfully reversed her cancer.

Rubio Cancer Center – Treating Cancer with Immunotherapy

Founded by Dr. Geronimo Rubio, the Rubio Cancer Center treats cancer patients from around the world. The types of cancers treated at the center include brain cancer, leukemia, lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and throat cancer. One approach that the Rubio Cancer Center utilizes is immunologic cancer treatments.

An immunologic treatment, also known as immunotherapy, uses the immune system’s natural ability to find and eliminate abnormal cells to fight cancer. Although cancer cells can avoid being detected by the immune system, the advancing field of immunology has produced new therapies that can strengthen the immune system’s response to cancerous tumors. Immunotherapies work by stimulating the immune system or counteracting a cancer cell’s ability to suppress the immune system’s response.

For over thirty years Geronimo Rubio MD, has been developing cancer vaccines and the Rubio Cancer Center is ahead of its time with Immunotherapy as the primary treatment used to treat all cancers including metastatic cancer.

Currently in the United States cancer vaccines are the new approach to helping patients, as Immunotherapy is being made available in many integrative cancer treatment centers.

Carolyn Gross Reversed Her Cancer through Immunotherapy

Carolyn Gross is a health and wellness expert and patient advocate for the Rubio Cancer Center in Tijuana, Mexico. The Rubio Cancer Center offers a different type of treatment for cancer than the traditional approach, including immunotherapy and stem cell treatments alongside chemotherapy and radiation.

Carolyn Gross was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer in 2003 and was offered the same treatment that both of her grandmothers received in their generation: a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. Gross declined and chose instead to opt for immunotherapy, a less invasive treatment which reversed her cancer without surgery.

Immunotherapy encompasses several different techniques that help the body’s own immune system recognize and fight cancer. Gross received cancer vaccines, a very new type of cancer therapy that is still being researched in laboratories. Some vaccines involve injecting an altered and killed version of the patient’s own tumor cells back into the body to help the immune system recognize and destroy all similar cancer cells. Others may boost the immune system through antigens or dendritic cells.

Because these treatments involve mounting a response from the preexisting systems in the body, Gross believes cancer should be approached with 50 percent attention to health care and 50 percent to self-care, such as diet, consistent detoxification protocols, supplements, exercise, reducing stress and rest. This self care lifestyle can help the body’s own immune system work at its highest capacity and, ideally, reverse the cancer and restore the patient to health.
